What is Authentication?

Authentication

Authentication is the process of verifying the identity of a user, device, or system before allowing access to a network, application, or data. It serves as the first line of defense in information security.

Common authentication methods include something the user knows (password), something the user has (a smart card or mobile device), or something the user is (biometrics like fingerprints or facial recognition).

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) enhances security by combining two or more of these factors.
