What is Remote Code Execution (RCE)?

Remote Code Execution (RCE)

Remote Code Execution (RCE) is a type of cyber attack that allows an attacker to run malicious code on a remote system or server without the user’s consent.

This can happen when vulnerabilities in software, such as buffer overflows or unpatched exploits, are discovered and exploited by an attacker. Once the attacker gains control, they can execute arbitrary commands, potentially taking over the entire system, stealing sensitive data, or deploying malware.

RCE attacks are particularly dangerous because they allow full remote control of the target system, often without the victim being aware.

To defend against RCE, organisations should regularly update their software, patch known vulnerabilities, and use security tools like firewalls and intrusion detection systems to monitor for suspicious activity.
