Social engineering refers to the manipulation of individuals into divulging confidential information, performing actions, or allowing access to systems through deceptive or coercive tactics.

Unlike technical attacks, social engineering targets human psychology, exploiting trust, fear, or ignorance. Common social engineering techniques include phishing, pretexting (impersonating a legitimate entity), baiting (offering something tempting to lure users into a trap), and tailgating (physically following someone into a restricted area).
