What is a Trojan Horse?

Trojan Horse

A Trojan Horse (often just called a Trojan) is a type of malware that disguises itself as a legitimate or useful program to deceive users into executing it.

Once the Trojan is installed, it can carry out malicious actions such as data theft, system corruption, or allowing unauthorised access to the infected system.

Unlike viruses and worms, Trojans do not replicate themselves but rely on tricking the user into installing or running the malware. Common types of Trojans include:

  • Backdoor Trojans: Allow attackers to remotely control the infected system.
  • Banking Trojans: Steal financial information, such as online banking credentials.
  • Spyware Trojans: Monitor user activity and collect sensitive data. To prevent Trojan infections, users should avoid downloading software from untrusted sources, keep their systems updated, and use robust security software.
